The Disgusting Food Museum goes bananas!

The Disgusting Food Museum goes bananas!

It’s time for gastronomic adventures. Bear with us and prepare your stomach, as it’s the Swiz Disgusting Food Museum. The description alone is going to make you rethink some things.

According to the authors of the exhibition, the feeling of disgust from an evolutionary point of view has often been helping our ancestors avoid unsafe food and, as a result, diseases.

As the authors say, disgust has been helping us evolve. You see it, smell it, feel sick, then put it back down and tell the rest not to eat that. Ultimately, it’s a survival mechanism. However, different cultures love experimenting and have different preferences. For some insects or long-stored meat is a life necessity. For others — even life or death like…

So, we neither judge nor discriminate today. We simply present diversity.

80 exhibits. Almost every one of them is for you to enjoy. “Please, do touch,” says the sign on some dishes.

Special excursions are organized from time to time, so you can try them and never ever forget the taste.

We’ll start with simple. Then, slowly be going down to gastronomic hell.

Licorice

This Scandinavian treat opens the list. Tolerated and even loved by many. A simple treat made of licorice root is not only a candy, but also good medicine for the stomach and many-many more aspects of the human body health.

Let’s go to something slightly more horrible, shall we?

Kumis

Made by fermenting raw unpasteurized milk for several days, it is a traditional beverage for Kazakhs. It is stirring and churning for a while, and the fermentation process (Lactobacilli bacteria) makes it an alcoholic drink through acidification and yeast.
Feels tough already, doesn’t it? Let’s move on.

The next cocktail catches your eye.
Sip it up – it’s tomato juice with a sheep’s eye floating in it! This juice is popular in Mongolia as a hangover remedy.

Mopane worm

Women harvest those worms once or twice a year in most rainy seasons. Several weeks of harvesting. Then comes the cooking process: it’s getting gutted, boiled, then dried. Sometimes there is a necessity to remove hairs and outgrowths and make sure that there are no poisonous plants feeding worms.
The rest are to be soaked, stewed, or fried and eaten like chips with onions and tomatoes. Crunchy!

Casu marzu, Sardinia

Some say that this cheese recipe is hundreds of years old. There is a version that kasu martsu appeared when they were making pecorino. They left it for a while until it rotted. And, well, it was expensive to make cheese in those days – so they gave it a try.

Cuy (pronounced “kwee”). A poor guinea pig.

The cooking process is fast and easy. They marinate it in a mixture of onion, green pepper, chili, and cumin, then cook it for about 20 minutes over hot coals until a crisp golden crust. Tender and juicy, it tastes like rabbit…

Deep-fried tarantula

Well, it’s just a deep-fried tarantula… Maybe it’s a way for arachnophobes to overcome their fear by eating the enemy? However, we do not think that this poor thing is too small for a decent meal. Perhaps, a quick snack to have during a lunch break.

Callu de Cabrettu
Don’t let that pretty name fool you.

Callu de Cabrettu is one of the oldest types of cheese. The recipe is more than 6000 years old.

At first, they slaughter a young little goat and take out the stomach that is still full of mother’s milk. Then they wail till it turns into cheese by the acids and rennet. A warm and dry place to let it lose moisture. One of the cruelest dishes on today’s list.

Mice wine. Korea.
They do not have mercy on Jerrys.
Making it in the countryside, they take a bottle of rice vodka and throw a newborn mouse while it’s alive. Within 3-4 days the wine is ready to be served.
Koreans believe the drink is an elixir for all diseases.

It is better to go to the museum on an empty stomach. As it’s the collection of the most extreme, hardcore cuisine.
“Your ticket is a bag of vomit with our logo on it,” says Samuel West, the museum’s founder.

And we think it’s better to grab two…
World Environment Day 2022

World Environment Day 2022

World Environment Day is a global event aimed at raising awareness of ecological problems our planet is facing. It is led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which holds and encourages conferences, demonstrations, flash mobs, and other public events to promote environmental public outreach and fight against pollution.

When is World Environment Day?

It is held annually on 5 June, but environmental activism is encouraged all year round.

History of World Environment Day

The date is not coincidental. On 5 June, 1972, the UN started the first ever ecological conference, during which the impact of humanity on the environment was discussed in a global framework, by representatives of different countries. Sweden was the first to suggest holding such an event and negotiated it for several years, until finally it was set to take place in Stockholm. Leaders from all over the world came to discuss the environmental issues their countries were handling and identify the common problems, like pollution, to tackle them on an international level. That is how Environment Day came to be: two years later, in 1974, the first celebration was held under the theme “Only One Earth”.

Since then, the event has been slowly gaining popularity. Celebrities and influencers from different cultures talk about it and encourage participation, spreading environmental awareness. Pop culture also acknowledges the importance of preserving our planet, with shows like The Simpsons marking World Environment Day with special episodes – meaning that the eco-friendly mindset is becoming more common, just as it should be.

How to participate?

It doesn’t matter if you are an actor, an artist, or a college student – you can join the global community simply by spending time outdoors in nature, or by discussing pressing ecological problems with your family and friends.

Moreover, on 5 June, many conferences are held, so check your local public spaces, or look up events online. And any awareness and nature-preserving activities are always appreciated!

If you are up for a more involved participation, here are some ideas:

1. Clean up in your neighborhood or in a local park

Go on a hunt for empty bottles that are not in a bin. Plastic pollutes the ground and takes years to recycle in the soil, so the damage done by leaving trash is long-term, to put it mildly. Don’t forget to recycle your findings!

2. Make a commitment to recycle

While we are on that topic, consider dividing your trash into groups and utilizing it in the appropriate way. Look up if your local infrastructure sets up waste disposal facilities that support recycling initiatives.

3. Plant a tree

Trees absorb odors, decrease pollution, produce carbon, cool overheated places, give shade in summer, and provide a home to birds and pollinators, so an extra one won’t hurt. Talk to your local authorities about planting more trees and flower beds, or consider planting vegetation on your own property.

4. Consider your diet

About one third of the food we produce annually goes to waste. Thinking through what you need to buy and in what quantities will reduce your “foodprint” and save your money. Also, support local producers and avoid overpacked products, since they imply wasting resources and incurring pollution to get them on your table.

5. Volunteer

Anyone can volunteer, and it will make an impact on the whole community. Get out of your comfort zone and take part in an ecological initiative. No matter how you participate, you will feel the involvement in the global effort to protect the environment.

Only One Earth 2022

This year’s celebration is the anniversary of the Stockholm conference, so 50 years after it, World Environment Day 2022 is coming back to Sweden under the slogan of the first event: “Only One Earth.” This similarity will allow people to observe the improvements made since the first conference and the change in tendencies and our lifestyle. The celebration will focus on how humankind can live in harmony with nature and what ways are currently available to switch to a greener and more sustainable living, both through political initiatives and our individual choices. These questions are as pertinent as ever, since technological advances are ahead of our ability to predict their consequences and mitigate the impact on the environment. World Environment Day 2022 also coincides with Stockholm+50 – a high-level international conference on environmental issues.

Eco-mindset of World Environment Day

The celebration is intended to encourage people to take action against such pressing issues as pollution, global warming, waste disposal, and loss of biodiversity. Tackling these problems in time will postpone or even prevent reaching the critical point of our planet’s life support system.

Humankind is no longer an obedient and humble child of nature – with 21st century technologies, we can forge the image of our planet. And it will be people’s fault if this image is not a pretty one. The core life necessities all come from Mother Nature, and we have been negligently taking it for granted far too long. That is why we need World Environment Day – it invokes a sense of unity that makes it easier to spread the word about the challenges our planet is facing. With words come ideas, and ideas result in actions, and that is how our simple discussions, awareness, and simple actions can help to save the world.

Pride Month 2022

Pride Month 2022

The day when the queer community not only celebrates, but remembers our victims: rejected children, rejected husbands and wives, our murdered brothers and sisters.

We’re proudly wear LGBTQ+ flag, dress extravagantly, do makeup and come out. For many it’s even harder.

Blood does not family make. Those are relatives. Family are those with whom you share your good, bad, and ugly, and still love one another in the end. Those are the ones you select.

Hector Xtravaganza

So, how has it all started?

Stonewall, 1969.

28 July. The police ride to a local NY hotel Stonewall’s bar. Few of them went to the hotel itself, physically examining people there. Hard to believe nowdays – they’ve been cheking their sex. Not only they violently and forcefully interrupted their privacy. Police brutality did not know its borders that day, and their actions might be considered a morality crime.

It remains unknown what exactly happened that day in that bar, yet, Martin Doberman, an american historian and an gueer-activist states that New-York community have been suffering from the constant raids for decades. “Public Moral Squad” insists that, even though the riot in Stonewall was not pre-organized and escalated on the spot, it all came after a long time suffering.

The changes started to take place all over the world. From kitchen talks till other riots and rights defending organisations.

Now going to New-York 1970, June 28.

That was Brenda Howard, who arranged the first Pride in history – Christopher Street Liberation Day March. The name comes from the street Stonewall Inn was standing on. The people celebrated and protested at the same time.

Pride appeared the next year, and soon, the world’s LGBTQ+ community continued celebrating it.

I’m queer, where should I go this summer?

Here’s a top list out of the biggest prides!

Copenhagen Pride Parade

August 15 – August 22, 2022

Ophelia Square, City Hall Square

Madrid Pride Parade 2022

Berlin Pride: June 24, 2022

Kurfürstendamm, 14:00, the destination point is Brandenburger Tor.

Montreal Pride: August 8 – August 14, 2022

Marching from Metcalfe Street to Alexandre-DeSève Street.

London parade will be held on Saturday 2nd July 2022

From Oxford Circus to Regent Street, then to Piccadilly Circus, heading to Lower Regent Street along with Pall Mall, then passing Trafalgar Square and Whitehall to wrap it up!

Should I go If I’m not a queer, yet want to support the march?

Sure! You’re more than welcome, as being a privileged ally means expanding, normalising, and demarginalizing gueer-community. Yet, remember not to capitalize on gay culture, producing LGBTQ+ merch and making money out of it like big companies like doing. Then, respect queer-only spaces, those are not for you.

And one more thing –  remember to contribute all year round, though.

What Pride Month gives to us?

The events of the past that will neither be forgotten nor forgiven. The Pride Month helps society reflect on equality, inclusivity, tolerance and human rights. Ultimately, speaking up makes a difference, as today’s world is far away from being safe for LGBTQ+.

As an ACT UP’s poster says:

Silence = Death

So we do not keep silent neither this Pride Month, nor every other month of the year.

I think it’s a great way to live, to fight for yourself, to fight for your friends, to fight for a community of individuals who are sharing your experience and to fight for dignity and a better life, and there will be a tipping point. There will be victories and they will be joyous.

Greece. Family, Food, Etiquette, And Easter

Greece. Family, Food, Etiquette, And Easter

Greece is an ancient and vibrant country. A culture where family traditions are prioritised, where the healthiest cuisine can extend life for many years, emotionally charged etiquette is practised, and Easter is the most important event of the year. Let’s take a look at each aspect of Greek life one by one.

Family values in the Greek culture

Family is very important in Mediterranean society. In the Greek world, everyone’s existence revolves around their family. It might be great or unpleasant at times, but it is an unavoidable truth. One is a part of his family, and his or her family is a part of oneself. It’s not a connection, it’s a chain.

Until the parents pass away, they direct their children what to do. Children are told to marry during the first 20 or 30 or 40 years of their lives, and once married, they are pushed to have childs. So that their parents can play with their grandkids. It’s also worth noting that one of the Greek proverbs goes, “My children’s children are twice my children.” Grandchildren are extremely essential in the lives of their grandparents. Apart from that, they rely on each other for trouble and tease each other, but that’s how families work, right?

A Greek mother is always telling you what to do, and she will do it until she dies or until you die, whichever comes first. For example, in your mid-50s, your Greek mother still tells you how to do things. It is part of their makeup.

And what about the males and females? Even though it is traditionally thought to be a patriarchal society, it is far more fluid. It would be inaccurate to think that it is dominated by men in the sense that a stereotype suggests. In the familial and family institutions, women wield a great deal of authority. Because interaction relationships are far more complex, it is not clear or common.

Ancient Greek cuisine

The Mediterranean diet is the oldest diet that is still practised today. There is one specific area in Greece—Central Crete. People here adapt to anything. If they eat only traditional food, they’re all fit as hell.

Herbs, or Horta, are an incredibly important part of Greek cuisine. Horta is best collected when the weather is dry, either early in the morning or later in the evening. The moon’s phase is also important: the best and most valuable herbs are harvested during the full moon or days near it. During this time, the above-ground section of all plants concentrates the most beneficial elements.

Any local woman will tell you about 20–25 names of wild herbs and will go out into the field to find them. This is still part of their knowledge. Cretans mix Horta with eggs and make dolma with stuffed grape leaves. And then they pulled out this dish, geranium leaves fried in olive oil. Even though the french fries are always fried in olive oil, there’s no other oil than olive oil.

Wild asparagus, fava beans, and sardines are popular among Cretans. And the snails are also food there. They eat them a lot. When you consider the evolution of meal, you realise that when you have rations of seashells and snails, you don’t need a lot of hunting abilities. There’s no need for a bow and arrows. You simply stroll over to them and devour them. Perhaps the oldest cuisine we must eat is in Crete. The products there are high in omega-3 and low in fat.

Greeks Etiquette

In the spoken Greek language, you do not use “Please” or “Thank you” the way you would in English. People think that the Greeks are rude, but that is just a linguistic and stylistic difference. Their notions of civility are expressed in different ways rather than in basic language rights. The locals will not say “May I have,” but rather “Give me.”

Respect is demonstrated via actions. Your actions will reveal how courteous and civilised you are to Greeks. They don’t rely on language; instead, they engage in nonverbal activities. People in Mediterranean cultures make a lot of hand gestures. When speaking, the Greeks make extensive use of their arms and bodies. Speaking is a phenomena for them, thus they will use their entire body and create an event every time they speak, even if they don’t have anything to say.

Easter in Greece

In contrast to the rest of Europe, Easter is at the centre of the year in Greece. Even Christmas, to a lesser extent. For Greeks, Easter is the most important holiday. Only about 4-7 percent of Greeks consider themselves religious. Nonetheless, everyone attends church on Easter Sunday.

Because the Greeks are an Orthodox people, they celebrate Easter for a week or two, as the week prior is busy with church activities. The following week is jam-packed with events and celebrations. However, despite everything that has happened in the last two millennia, Easter remains the focal point of Greek family and cultural life.

People will attend to a midnight service the night before, on Saturday to Sunday, and in the countryside, people used to hurl firecrackers up in the air when the resurrection happened a few years ago, but today it is almost forbidden.

The traditional Easter feast is lamb on the spit, which is a time-consuming affair. You will burn the animal unless you know what you’re doing. However, every home in Greece would still prepare a spit-roasted lamb for Easter.
